Audubon Vermont & Vermont Coverts will be offering a series of workshops for landowners to explore management practices to benefit wildlife. The workshops may be attended as a series or as stand-alone programs.

Creating a Vision for Your Forested Land
9:30 am to 3:30 pm
Lunch provided
Mad River Valley - January 26th  Lareau Farm, Waitsfield

Forest landowners are the key to healthy forests in Vermont. This workshop will help landowners identify various habitat features on their property in order to create their own personal goals and objectives for the management of their property. Landowners will come away with a better understanding of what they want for their property as well as the resources and professionals available to support their decisions. This workshop is most appropriate for landowners with 25 acres or more.

Wildlife of Vermont Forests
7 pm
Mad River Valley - March 17th  Yestermorrow,  Waitsfield

Join biologists from Vermont Coverts and Audubon Vermont as they take you on a wildlife tour through Vermont’s various forest habitats in search of wildlife! Learn what animals rely on our forested landscape and the management strategies that can enhance their presence in Vermont.

Wildlife Inventory & Monitoring
Evening Session 7 pm
Half Day Field Session 9 am to Noon
Mad River Valley - May 2nd & 3rd Harwood Union High School

Many landowners want to know what wildlife species occur in their forested landscape. This workshop will help participants become better observers of wildlife, learn how to keep records of wildlife sightings and how to use this information when making management decisions. The evening session will focus on the techniques while the field session the following day will put those practices to work. Sessions may be attended separately but participants are strongly encouraged to attend both.

Invasives On Your Property
9 am to Noon
Mad River Valley - July 19th
Site TBA; looking for landowner willing to host this workshop on their property

Invasive plants and animals are becoming an increasing threat to our forested landscape. The Nature Conservancy (TNC) will be joining Vermont Coverts and Audubon Vermont for this hands-on workshop. TNC’s WOW! program will show landowners how to efficiently and effectively cut and chop woody plants like Japanese barberry, buckthorn and bush honeysuckle and smother and pull herbaceous plants like garlic mustard and goutweed as mechanisms to manage populations growing in woodlands.

Landowners will also be able to discuss the benefits of safely utilizing herbicides during invasive plant removal and learn about the different types of herbicides on the market, how they work, and the safest and best techniques for application.  Finally, proper disposal of invasive plants is a key in preventing their spread and landowners will learn the do's and don'ts of what to do with the plant once they are removed.
