 How the Card Happened
Have you ever thought that you would shop more locally IF ONLY merchants would offer a discount on goods and services to Valley residents? ... A Green Mountain Valley School senior, Tik Root, decided to take action and make it happen: "The common misconception is that shopping locally will break the bank. It gets tiresome to hear people justify shopping at big stores, or up in Burlington just because the price is slightly less. The idea for the Mad River Valley Discount Card started to develop in the spring of 2007 after these excuses became too much to hear over and over again. Something had to be done to bolster community support of our local businesses. This discount card is intended to promote local business by providing people with the financial incentive to shop locally. The idea is based on a program at Middlebury Union High School where all the sports teams sell discount cards at the beginning of the school year. The short-fall of the one in Middlebury is that it was organized by a company, and favored larger, non-local businesses, like McDonalds and Subway. The model we are using in the Valley is purely to feature and support locally owned and operated businesses. Who gets the Proceeds from Card Sales?? Poceeds of the Card Sales support: GMVS Fresh Connection, Harwood and Native Energy and Environmental Charity.

The cost of a Local Discount Card is $10 for a whole year of savings at participating merchants! This card is will pay off in only a couple uses. This website will be updated daily to include updated offers, and a growing list of participating businesses. AND, the proceeds from the sale of the Local Discount Card will be donated initially to GMVS Fresh Connection, Harwood and Native Energy and Environmental Charity.
